# What is blockspace?

The capacity of Bitcoin's blocks, as the block.space documents define and BTI measures it.

In the block.space documents, [blockspace](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/blockspace/) is the capacity of Bitcoin's blocks, consumed by transactions. [Blockspace Value Theory](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/bvt/) calls it "a socially constructed commodity built on top of a protocol-enforced constraint" and argues it exists only while a block is being built. [BTI](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/bti/) measures what was consumed: every byte of every transaction, counted exactly, from the genesis block forward.
