# What is the witness discount?

SegWit weighs witness bytes at a quarter of other bytes, so they cost a quarter as much.

The [witness discount](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/witness-discount/) is SegWit's rule: a non-witness byte weighs 4 weight units and a witness byte 1, so at f sat/vB a witness byte costs f/4 sats. In the July 2026 measurement run, inscriptions measured 3.374 bytes per vbyte and runestones 1.0000. [BVT](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/bvt/) proposes the discount sells the same resource at a quarter of the price.
