# Atomicals as a natural experiment

An observation offered to BVT: Atomicals kept its consumed blockspace and lost its community, so its market is a test between Reading B and Reading C.

> Theory, not fact. Blockspace Value Theory is a living document and an untested thesis. BTP and BYTES are drafts describing things that do not exist.

This page reports a companion observation to [Blockspace Value Theory](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/bvt/), noted on 2026-07-28 and aimed at BVT Part VII and its three readings. It is an argument about what a market should show, not a measured result.

## The observation

The observation's claim is that Atomicals and its ARC-20 tokens are "the first blockspace-token protocol where **the consumption layer and the community layer have fully decoupled**". That, it says, "makes it the control group BVT has been missing." It describes three layers with three fates.

### 1. The consumption is permanent

Every `atom` witness envelope ever revealed is still consensus-valid data. The observation lists "The founder's disappearance (2024), the treasury drain (Feb 2026), and the death of every wallet, marketplace, and hosted indexer" and says they "changed **zero bytes** of it."

### 2. The interpretation layer died and can be rebuilt

Ownership state "is a pure function of (chain data, protocol rules)". The complete ARC-20 ledger can be re-derived from chain data and the published rules alone, with no snapshot or API. "**A dead protocol with published rules is a resurrectable index.**" The contrast it draws is TAP, "where the writer is closed and tap-reader only mirrors."

### 3. The live ledger decays

ARC-20 is colored sats: tokens ride specific satoshis, one sat to one unit (see [sats and ordinals](/concepts/sats-and-ordinals/)). With protocol-aware wallets gone, holders who spend those outputs through ordinary wallets burn or scramble their tokens under the protocol's own rules. So:

- the historical record is immortal;
- the computable current state can always be recovered;
- the economically live supply "shrinks monotonically as custody knowledge evaporates."

It names this [decay-by-amnesia](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/decay-by-amnesia/): "A slow, unintentional, permanent burn — supply deflation by amnesia." The [Shared Claim Axiom](/concepts/attribution-and-the-axiom/) cites it as "blockspace burning continuously at scale".

## What each reading predicts

BVT offers three readings of why the market prices provenance rather than kilobytes ([Readings A, B and C](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/readings-a-b-c/)). The observation sets out what each predicts for Atomicals after the collapse:

| Reading | Prediction |
|---|---|
| A: the market is immature | Prices re-anchor toward consumption value as infrastructure restores legibility |
| B: consumption sets the floor, provenance the price | A thin but nonzero floor persists; provenance premia collapse toward it |
| C: value is purely cultural | Prices trend to zero despite permanent consumption |

"**Whatever Atomicals prices do from here is evidence between B and C**". It calls this the cleanest such evidence available, "because every other roster protocol still has a live community confounding the signal." If a measurable floor persists relative to kilobytes consumed, "consumption-as-floor gains real support". If prices go fully to zero, "BVT should concede the floor is cultural (Reading C)".

It adds a second effect. Because of decay-by-amnesia, "*even under Reading C*, surviving intact ARC-20 positions become scarcer over time without any demand change". That is a supply-side experiment inside the demand-side one.

## What BTP would change

The [BTP draft](/concepts/btp/) says its SUCCEED operation would let holders of dead-protocol tokens such as ARC-20 exit by burning into live tokens, so "the Atomicals natural experiment gains an observable exit ramp." BTP does not exist.

## What can be measured

The observation lists four measurements:

- total KB consumed by all Atomicals operations;
- live against destroyed supply over time, "the decay-by-amnesia curve, measurable at every height";
- holder-count decay, distinct holding scripts since the collapse;
- remaining marketplace listings, for the price side.

The first is now on block.space. [BTI](/concepts/bti/) carries two Atomicals families in [the three books](/concepts/the-three-books/), read as of block 972,299, 2026-10-20 09:30:48 UTC:

| | ARC-20 | Atomicals NFTs |
|---|---|---|
| Book A bytes | 4.95 GB | 0.07 GB |
| share of the chain's bytes | 0.64 % | 0.01 % |
| operations | 8,284,671 | 32,517 |
| tokens | 657 | 32,230 |
| first block | 808081 | 808579 |
| last block | 972299 | 929700 |

The sources this page draws on do not report the decay-by-amnesia curve, the holder-count decay or the price side, so for this page they are not measured, and the test the observation proposes has no reported result.

## The one-line version

> Atomicals is the natural experiment: the blockspace survived, the community didn't, and the market's treatment of the survivors is the cleanest available measurement of whether consumption or culture sets the floor.
