# carriage

Bytes a token rode without buying them. A token **rides** a transaction when the transaction would have happened anyway, such as a payment or consolidation that carried the token along. Carriage is measured in full and is never [backing](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/backing/): carriage answers what moved through the blockspace, backing answers what the blockspace was bought for. It is one of the four categories of the [conservation](https://blockspace.wiki/glossary/conservation/) partition.
