backing
Also: bought, bytes bought, backed
Blockspace bought for a token's purpose. A transaction is bought for a token when it exists for that token's operation: its inputs and outputs, including the funding input, serve the operation and nothing else. Bytes a token merely rides are carriage, measured in full and never backing.
A failed operation whose failure the protocol's own ledger records still bought its blockspace, and those bytes count as backing. Failed demand that left no record in any protocol's ledger is measured separately and is never backing.
